After months of parliamentary deadlock over Brexit, the UK returned to the polls on December 12th and re-elected the Conservative Party to government who publicly back freer movement and trade with Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Conservatives succeeded in retaining power with their majority expected to be between 78 and 82 (final results pending).
The party has frequently promoted the CANZUK campaign in public and behind parliamentary doors, with Johnson himself stating that the CANZUK union represents “a natural alliance to be deepened and developed” and has called for a Trans-Tasman style free movement area to exist between the UK and Australia (with further development to Canada and New Zealand).
Conservative MPs have also pledged their support for CANZUK, including Isle of Wight MP, Bob Seely, who chairs the CANZUK All Party Parliamentary Group and issued a report with other MPs advocating for the introduction of CANZUK, stating:
“Since 1973, there has been a common travel area – known as the Trans-Tasman agreement – between Australia and New Zealand, which could serve as the model for a wider CANZUK area. The UK should propose the creation of a similar area, extended to all CANZUK states”.

The election result is significant news for the CANZUK campaign, as the UK government will now have 5 years to not only organize the country’s departure from the European Union, but also negotiate free movement and trade with Canada, Australia and New Zealand given the significant support within the party for increased CANZUK development.
CANZUK International will reach out to all re-elected and new MPs within the UK government and advocate for our proposals to be a high priority issue on the government’s agenda. We congratulate the Conservative Party on a successful election campaign and look forward to working with them in developing closer diplomatic ties between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
