Government leaders from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have confirmed they will build upon their intelligence arrangements to develop economic as well as strategic policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance – a comprehensive signals, military and human intelligence pact between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the USA – will be used to create “trusted supply chains”, Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison told MPs this week.
In an address to a joint party room meeting in Canberra, Morrison said the government needed to stay on top of health issues and get Australians back to work.
Australia’s supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been largely dependent on China, and many critics of the government have exposed supply-chain flaws in providing needed PPE to hospitals, businesses and industries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the announcement to develop the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance beyond security to economic collaboration is welcome news for many Australians, as future supplies of needed medical equipment and PPE can be procured through collaboration with like-minded allies, predominantly Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Leading MPs and Diplomats have confirmed mutual intentions from the four CANZUK countries (along with the USA) to collaborate on future economic policy, which will lead to further trade developments.
The announcement from CANZUK leaders comes one week from the British-Australian Chamber of Commerce stating that free movement of citizens will be a major benefit arising from trade negotiations between Australia and the UK, and one month since the UK government confirmed its intentions to introduce reciprocal visa arrangements with Canada, Australia and New Zealand via trade deals.
CANZUK International will continue to liaise with foreign affairs representatives across Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom and advocate for continued policy developments regarding trade, free movement and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance.
