A parliamentary petition advocating for reciprocal migration and trade between Canada, Australia, New Zealand & the UK has surpassed 10,000 signatures and will officially receive a response from the UK government in the coming weeks.

The online petition, entitled “Establish free movement & trade agreements with Canada, Australia & New Zealand” was submitted to the UK parliament in late-October and will now receive an official response from the UK government under Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The petition states:
“As the UK concludes its transition period with the EU, the government should seek new diplomatic arrangements with Canada, Australia & New Zealand (CANZUK), formulating reciprocal migration & trade agreements between these countries to improve work and travel opportunities for citizens.
“Canada, Australia, New Zealand & the United Kingdom (CANZUK) are four of the closest and most like-minded nations in the world. Together, we share the same Sovereign, linguistic, cultural & historical ties, and are formidable allies in promoting democracy & human rights across the world. By expanding our relationship to develop free trade & reciprocal living and working rights for our citizens, CANZUK will become an alliance that promotes opportunity & prosperity in the post-Brexit era.”

At time of writing, the petition has received over 10,200 signatures and will remain active on the UK parliament website until April 23rd, 2021. If the petition receives over 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for active debate in the House of Commons.
It is expected that the petition will receive a favourable response from the UK government given its ambitions for a gold standard trade deal with Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s support for closer ties with the CANZUK countries.
Tracking website Petition Map also indicates that significant support exists for the CANZUK petition in Brecon & Radnorshire (Wales), South East Cornwall (England) and the cities of London & Westminster.
CANZUK International will continue to monitor the progress of the petition and await the UK government’s response, expected in the coming weeks.
