Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Scott Morrison will meet in Washington DC on Tuesday where talks are expected to commence regarding the relaxation of Australian border rules for UK citizens.
Australia has imposed some of the toughest border measures in the world to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
However, such measures could be lifted for UK citizens in the coming weeks as both countries’ Prime Ministers will discuss the easement of travel restrictions.
UK Ministers are reportedly frustrated at the quarantine rules which make it impossible for British citizens to travel to Australia, even though vaccinated Australians are able to enter the UK without self-isolating at all.
Should discussions prove successful, UK citizens will also be able to enter Australia with little/no requirements of isolation. However, citizens may need to prove a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival.
At present, all international travelers entering Australia need to undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine at a designated facility.
The Australian government wants to vaccinate 70-80% of the population over the age of 16 to exit lockdown, with currently only about 36% of Australians over 16 currently fully vaccinated.
CANZUK International is encouraged by the UK and Australia engaging in talks to ease travel restrictions and will advocate for Ministers to safely continue the easing of travel restrictions between the two countries.
