Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, along with the USA, have called on Interpol to suspend Russia from its international law enforcement capabilities.
The five countries, which make up the Five-Eyes Intelligence Alliance – a comprehensive intelligence collaboration focusing on signals, military and human intelligence – have requested “the immediate suspension of Russia’s access to its systems”, said British Home Secretary Priti Patel via Twitter on Sunday.
The five nations have asked Interpol’s executive committee to make a decision this week.
“Russia’s actions are a direct threat to the safety of individuals and to international law enforcement cooperation,” Patel said.
Interpol, a network of 194 member countries, aims to facilitate the policing of international crimes. The prohibition of Russia from the network would seek to be detrimental to Russia by hindering its national security capabilities.
Patel did not specify the reason for the request, but the CANZUK nations and the United States have been seeking to diplomatically and economically isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
CANZUK International will continue to monitor the ongoing diplomatic developments between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and resulting sanctions towards Russia in the coming days.
