New polling has revealed that amongst New Zealand citizens, strong support exists for establishing closer military and defence ties with Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Polling conducted amongst New Zealand adults (18-45) asked whether New Zealand should focus more on a CANZUK defence alliance in light of Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine, and growing concerns around other countries – including China – posing a threat to New Zealand’s national security interests.
“Following the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia, do you agree that New Zealand should focus more on developing a military alliance with Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom to safeguard New Zealand’s national security interests?”, read the question.
59% of respondents either somewhat agreed or strongly agreed. In comparison, 33% either somewhat disagreed or strongly disagreed, and 8% did not know.

Respondents were also posed the same question, except whether they would prefer a military and defence alliance with the United States instead of the four CANZUK nations. Only 49% supported this proposal (-10%), while 44% did not support this proposal (+11%), comparatively. 7% stated that they did not know (-1%).
The polling of 1,892 adults across New Zealand comes after the CANZUK countries, and the United States, recently called for the suspension of Russia from Interpol, and New Zealand agreed a comprehensive trade deal with the United Kingdom to advance freer movement of goods and services, and mobility of skilled professionals.
CANZUK International will continue to work with MPs and Senators across the four countries and emphasize the recent support shown from New Zealand citizens towards establishing further military and defence collaboration amongst the CANZUK nations.
