Following the May 2022 Australian national election, CANZUK International will begin engaging with newly elected Australian Members of Parliament to advocate for closer diplomatic ties between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
The May election was a decisive victory for the Australian Labor Party led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, resulting in 9 new ALP Members of Parliament replacing the seats of those from the outgoing Liberal/National coalition.
“While congratulatory letters were sent to all elected Members of the Australian Labor Party in May, now is the time for us to begin engaging with the Australian government on matters regarding free movement and foreign policy cooperation with Canada, New Zealand and the UK,” said CANZUK International CEO, James Skinner.
“We have held very positive consultations with the ALP during their tenure as official opposition, and we trust the newly elected government will continue this enthusiasm for CANZUK moving forward in the coming months ahead.”
Australia and the UK already signed a comprehensive bilateral trade deal in December 2021, announcing new passport arrangements for Australian and UK citizens to live and work in each others’ countries.
Consultations with the New Zealand and Canadian governments are also ongoing, with the intention of using the Australia-UK trade deal as a template to promote further visa arrangements and trade between the four CANZUK countries.
As part of our engagement strategy, we also encourage Australian citizens to contact their local Member of Parliament and Senator, and request their support for CANZUK, highlighting the benefits of free movement, trade and foreign policy cooperation between the four countries.
CANZUK International looks forward to all upcoming engagements with the newly elected Australian government and will continue to promote CANZUK supportive policies as part of Australian foreign policy.
