Canada has broadened its air transport agreement with Australia, enabling both countries’ airlines to operate an unlimited number of direct passenger and cargo flights.
Airlines from each country now have access to any location within the other’s territory. This agreement was established at the recent International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation Event in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2023, Australia ranked as Canada’s 18th largest air travel destination, with over half a million one-way passenger trips recorded.

Minister of Transport Anita Anand expressed Canada’s commitment to strengthening connections with Australia, noting, “This enhanced air transport agreement will improve travel access, reinforce our cultural and economic ties, and support more resilient supply chains. This is excellent news for travelers and businesses in both countries.”
This expansion is part of Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which promotes sustainable competition and growth in international air services. This could serve as a model or even foundation for CANZUK-wide agreements that would encompass all four countries, ultimately supporting the vision of a more integrated and cooperative partnership.
Overall, this agreement represents a significant step toward strengthening the connections within CANZUK’s framework, offering practical benefits that align with its goals of greater mobility, economic collaboration, and cultural unity among member nations.
