Australia and UK Strengthen Bilateral Ties In Defence

Key outcomes include agreements to integrate Australian Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar technology into UK platforms, strengthen energetics and munitions supply chains, and explore European weapons integration for Australia’s MQ-28A Ghost Bat collaborative combat aircraft.

Ministers also highlighted workforce mobility initiatives, committing to facilitate the movement of skilled personnel between the two countries to support AUKUS delivery. This includes exploring reciprocal recognition of security clearances and qualifications to streamline collaboration.

Additionally, both sides agreed to pursue joint demonstrations of advanced capabilities, with the UK invited to observe MQ-28A testing at Woomera in 2026.

Australian Minister Pat Conroy emphasized the importance of the dialogue, stating, “The Australia-United Kingdom Defence Industry Dialogue is an opportunity to discuss deeper defence industry collaboration and ways we can collectively strengthen our defence capability.” The meeting also addressed broader industrial resilience, including co-development of hypersonic technologies and quantum systems.

This renewed focus on bilateral defence ties exemplifies the growing synergy between CANZUK nations in addressing global security challenges. As Australia and the UK forge ahead with AUKUS, there is potential for expanded involvement from Canada and New Zealand, building on shared Five Eyes intelligence cooperation and common strategic interests. Such initiatives not only enhance military interoperability but also foster economic growth through innovation and trade in the defence sector, reinforcing the CANZUK framework as a pillar of international stability.
