Canada is considering joining the AUKUS defence pact after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held “excellent conversations” with Australia, the United Kingdom and the USA over joining the alliance.
AUKUS was launched in September 2021 and is a premier defence alliance focused on sharing nuclear submarine technology, which in 2023, announced intentions to help Australia build its first vessels.
The Canadian Prime Minister said to the media that he had already held “excellent conversations” with the US, UK and Australia over joining the alliance, as he believes that Canada may require nuclear submarines to patrol its Arctic waters.

Canada would become the fourth member of the pact, which is now looking at sharing information on technology, artificial intelligence, and the construction of new weapons.
Trudeau also said that it was “really important that allies, particularly across the Indo-Pacific, work together in stronger and tighter ways”, alluding to the alliance’s growing threat from China.
The announcement came as the Prime Minister launched a new defence policy document that included calls for the purchase of conventionally powered submarines and left open the prospect of a nuclear model.
“We will be looking at what type of submarines are most appropriate for Canada’s responsibility in protecting the longest coastline in the world, and certainly the longest Arctic coastline in the world,” he said.
CANZUK International is pleased with the decision by the Canadian government to consider membership of AUKUS, and will continue to advocate for the inclusion of Canada and New Zealand in the defence alliance.
