A new report by The Adam Smith Institute in the United Kingdom has revealed strong public support in the UK and Australia for establishing trade and freer movement between the countries and furthering links with Canada and New Zealand.
The report highlights that among the British public, 66% say the UK should trade more with Australia, followed by Canada with 63% and New Zealand with 61%.
This was complimented by overall support among Australians, with 69% supporting a free trade deal with the UK and 77% believing that it is essential for Australia to trade more with its closest allies.
The findings were based on 1,500 people polled in each country from May 26th – May 31st, 2021, with a margin of error weighted around +/-3.0%.
“Our histories are deeply entwined. But so are our futures,” states the report’s executive summary. “We are living through an era of an increasingly complex geostrategic environment. There is a growing need for nations with shared values and goals to work closely together.”
Respondents were also asked about what the UK and Australian governments should put at the heart of an upcoming trade deal. In the UK, 84% said that mutual skills recognition between the two nations should be a priority, with 79% saying the same for greater opportunities to live, work and travel between the countries.
In Australia, similar results were shown. 80% said that mutual skills recognition between the two nations should be a priority while 81% said that there should be priority consideration given for greater opportunities to live, work and travel between the two countries.
“Overall the message is clear: Aussies and Brits are the closest of mates, open to becoming even closer through a comprehensive expansion of trade in goods and services, increased investment across economies and movement of people,” the report concludes.

CANZUK International is delighted with report’s polling results, demonstrating greater support for freer movement of people and trade between Australia & the United Kingdom. We will continue to work with Australian and British politicians to ensure CANZUK policies are adopted as part of upcoming trade and mobility agreements.
