The Conservative Party of Canada have released their CANZUK election pledge ahead of the upcoming federal election on September 20th, 2021.
Canadians will go to the polls on September 20th, 2021 after Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, dissolved parliament on Sunday.
Two days later, the Conservative Party of Canada, led by Erin O’Toole MP, published their platform document entitled “Canada’s Recovery Plan”, which includes a detailed policy regarding CANZUK.
O’Toole has long supported CANZUK free movement, trade and foreign policy cooperation, and has pledged to begin discussions towards its implementation within his first 100 days of office.
“For years, I have been advocating for a CANZUK agreement,” he said at a meeting with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce earlier this year. “This trade a mobility deal would provide a stepping-stone for further integration and partnerships with the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.”
The Conservative Party platform is detailed in a 160 page document, with CANZUK specifically mentioned under the heading “Creating jobs through expanding trade with free nations.”
The policy reads:
“Canada’s Conservatives will pursue a Canada-Australia-New Zealand-United Kingdom (“CANZUK”) agreement that could include:
– Free trade and flow of capital investment between the partners;
– Reciprocal freedom to study, live and work for citizens under expanded areas of labour coordination as agreed upon by all parties;
– Enhanced defence and security partnerships, including defence production agreements to allow for shared procurement; and
– Expanded intelligence cooperation, especially in the areas of cyber-warfare, combatting disinformation, and protecting critical infrastructure”.
CANZUK International is delighted with the announcement and commitment towards CANZUK by the Canadian Conservative Party. We encourage all political parties across Canada to adopt similar provisions for CANZUK as part of their election platforms and advocate for the benefits of CANZUK amongst the Canadian public in the coming weeks.
