The United Kingdom and New Zealand have signed a comprehensive trade deal that removes barriers and tariffs on goods and services, and grants greater opportunities for working professionals under revised visa arrangements.
The deal was signed by International Trade Secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and New Zealand Minister for Trade and Export Growth, Damien O’Connor.
After reaching an agreement in principle last October, negotiators have worked continuously over recent months with input from CANZUK International to finalize an agreement.
The result is that the UK-New Zealand trade relationship – which was worth £2.3 billion in 2020 – is now expected to increase by almost 60%, generating economic growth and prosperity for both economies through reduced red tape and revised rules around import/export regulations.
Under the new deal, tariffs will be eliminated on all exports, and smaller UK businesses will find it easier to break into the New Zealand market as a result of modernised customs procedures (such as digital documents and customs clearance as quick as six hours).
With regards to visa arrangements, working professionals in certain vocations (such as lawyers and auditors) will be able to work in the UK and New Zealand more easily and bring their families with them. The scope of professions under this category will also continue to be expanded over time as the UK and New Zealand governments further engage with CANZUK International.
The new deal is the most advanced agreement New Zealand and the UK have ever signed, and sets the ideal foundation upon which further CANZUK policies can develop.
More information about the deal can be found via the UK government website.
CANZUK International welcomes the announcement of the New Zealand-UK Free Trade Agreement and will continue to work with officials from both governments to develop freer movement for citizens as part of future discussions.
