To ease ongoing labour shortages following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian government are planning to introduce visa fast-tracking for a range of skilled migrants in 2023.
The plans will introduce a new proposal which would facilitate the process of bringing skilled workers into the country – something which the current government has committed to resolving in pursuit of reigniting the economy following the 2020 pandemic.
Australia’s Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, and Migrant Services, Andrew Giles MP, ordered the country’s Department of Home Affairs to fast-track visa applications that would be an adequate response to the shortage of skilled workers.
The Minister said that the business community, together with the previous government, expressed concerns for several years regarding the delays in processing visa applications. This ultimately led to an economic slowdown as businesses were facing labour shortages and unable to acquire foreign labour in an adequate period of time.
“Processing outstanding visa applications is a priority for the Australian government. We are committed to ensuring that visa applications are processed in a timely manner,” the Minister stated in a recent announcement this week.
According to a report by SBS, the main occupations for temporary skilled visas granted by authorities in Australia between July and September 2022 were software engineers, ICT business analysts, resident medical officers, chefs as well as developer programmers.
While not an exhaustive list, the new announcement will be great news for all skilled workers across Canada and the United Kingdom who are typically sought after by Australian firms for their educational, linguistic and cultural competences.
Once granted visas to enter and work in Australia, Canadians and Britons will have further opportunities to obtain permanent residency and pursue a pathway to citizenship.
CANZUK International welcomes the news from the Australian Department of Home Affairs and will continue to provide updates as more information is released on the fast-track program in the coming months.
