The Australian government has made it easier for New Zealanders to obtain permanent residency in the country under new rules announced by the Department of Home Affairs.
Changes will allow New Zealanders – who applied for a subclass 189 visa on or before December 10th 2022 – to bypass certain requirements related to income, length of residence, and health conditions.
The move is expected to help clear a backlog of around 11,500 applications and significantly reduce wait times from two years to six months or less.
There are also hopes that the simplified system will be expanded to assist up to 300,000 New Zealanders in obtaining permanent residency.

While the Australian government has temporarily stopped accepting new applications for 189 visas while it considers “future migration and citizenship pathways” for New Zealanders in the country, all existing applications will be finalized during this period, from December to July 2023. This fast track process aims to recognize that New Zealanders are long-term residents of Australia and have been contributing to the country’s economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Permanent residency will also allow New Zealanders in the system to access certain benefits, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme, social security payments, and automatic acquisition of Australian citizenship for children born in the country.
CANZUK International welcomes the announcement from the Australian Department of Home Affairs and looks forward to continuing engagements with the Australian government to further similar visa arrangements with the United Kingdom and Canada.
