International students across various disciplines will be able to stay in Australia for a further two years under changes to post-study work visa rights.
Starting in July 2023, the Temporary Graduate Work visa (subclass 485) will be extended for more than 400 bachelor’s and master’s programmes, as well as all PhD programmes.
This means undergraduates on any of these 400 programmes will now be able to stay and work in Australia for four years, rather than two years. Master’s students will also be able to stay for five years, rather than three, and PhD graduates in any discipline will be able to stay in Australia for six years instead of four.

The government announced that the extended post-study work rights would apply to graduates of certain occupations including medicine, psychology, pharmacy and teaching.
Speaking with Times Higher Education in Australia, Universities Australia’s Chief Executive, Catriona Jackson, said:
“The current skills crisis highlights the urgent need to retain more of these students, when and where there is a clear need for their skills, to complement our homegrown workforce and spur productivity and economic growth. The decision to extend working rights for PhD students, in particular, will provide a significant boost to the development of Australia’s knowledge economy.”
The announcement from the Australian government will be instrumental in furthering work and study opportunities for CANZUK citizens. According to data from the Australian government’s Department of Education, Skills and Employment, there were 21,942 Canadian students enrolled in Australian universities in 2021, making Canada the 6th largest source country for international students in Australia.
In the same year, there were 9,363 New Zealand students studying in Australian universities (making New Zealand the 10th largest source country for international students in Australia) and there were 15,595 students from the United Kingdom studying at Australian universities in 2021 (making the United Kingdom the 4th largest source country for international students in Australia).
Granting extended time on post-study visas will provide more opportunities for CANZUK citizens to study in Australia and gain easier pathways to permanent residency and citizenship. The measures will also allow Australia to retain talent from abroad and further educational initiatives for students from Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
CANZUK International welcomes the announcement from the Australian government to extend the length of post-study visas for international students, and will continue to lobby for further enhancements in support of CANZUK university programs and preferential student fees.
