On Thursday, the United Kingdom will officially join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), becoming the first new country to join the trade bloc since its establishment in 2018.
The announcement was confirmed by chief negotiators and senior officials from member countries who agreed that the UK has met the high standards required to join the pact, including market access requirements, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, and investor-state dispute settlement provisions.
The UK’s entry into the CPTPP is seen as a significant milestone, as it marks a major step towards the creation of a CANZUK alliance between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
The UK’s entry into the CPTPP is seen as a significant milestone, as it marks a major step towards the creation of a CANZUK alliance between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
As part of the trade alliance, the United Kingdom will receive and offer preferential trading relations with international partners, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
While some member states have expressed concerns about the precedent-setting nature of the UK’s accession, particularly as China’s application to join is next in the queue, the UK has emphasized the importance of providing ambitious market access offers to acceding parties.
Trade ministers from the CPTPP member countries will meet on Thursday to finalize the deal, which will be signed at a later time after the text has been legally verified and translated into various languages. The UK government has expressed optimism about the negotiations and is expected to provide an update on the matter at the earliest opportunity.
CANZUK International welcomes the announcement of the United Kingdom’s accession to the CPTPP and looks forward to developing further trading relations with Australia, New Zealand and Canada as part of CANZUK-specific negotiations.
