In a transformative development reminiscent of the expansion of the United Kingdom’s Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS), a new visa program under the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (AUKFTA) has been unveiled to promote new opportunities for British and Australian nationals seeking employment in either country.
In parallel with the YMS, the visa, known as the Innovation and Early Careers Skills Exchange Pilot (IECSEP), aspires to bolster the existing bonds between Australia and the United Kingdom, and establish a streamlined avenue for early-career professionals and distinguished innovators from the UK to contribute to Australia’s workforce.

The IECSEP, set to reshape professional mobility, extends two primary avenues for UK citizens:
• Early Careers Skills Stream: Under this category, participants may engage in brief placements, secondments, or intra-corporate transfers in Australia for a span of up to one year, finely aligning with their expertise within their home organizations.
• Innovation Stream: Tailored for individuals who have made substantial contributions to innovation, this stream grants the opportunity to explore employment prospects in Australia for a three-year tenure.
The program’s inaugural phase offers an allotment of 1,000 visas, with intentions to augment this quota to 2,000 visas in its second year, promising an expanded horizon of opportunities.
To qualify for either program stream, applicants must adhere to specific criteria:
• Early Careers Skills Stream: Eligible applicants must be UK citizens within the age bracket of 21 to 45 at the time of application. Additionally, they are required to hold tertiary qualifications and possess a minimum of three months’ professional experience within their home organizations, encompassing roles such as graduate trainees.
• Innovation Stream: This category extends to highly experienced and proficient UK citizens from diverse sectors, irrespective of age, who have established a demonstrable track record of contributing to innovation. This encompasses fields such as Research and Development, Renewable Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Technology, FinTech, AgriTech, as well as the Audio-visual and Cultural industries.
Both streams necessitate applicants to secure a formal letter of offer or an employment contract from an Australian organization. Successful candidates will additionally receive a Letter of Support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, an indispensable component of their visa application to the Department of Home Affairs.
The IECSEP duly acknowledges the pivotal role of innovation and skills mobility in the economies of both Australia and the United Kingdom. It incentivizes Australian employers to harness the expertise of innovative early-career professionals from the UK through an efficient mobility pathway.
The Innovation stream, in particular, offers a unique and time-limited prospect for highly skilled UK innovators to collaborate with Australian organizations for up to three years, including intra-corporate transfers. Conversely, the Early Careers stream empowers Australian organizations to engage in 12-month secondments, placements, or intra-corporate transfers of early-career UK professionals who possess tertiary qualifications.
CANZUK International welcomes the introduction of this new visa program under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, and we look forward to continuing our engagements with Australian and British officials to further expand freer movement of citizens between the two nations.
