The leader of the UK Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, has publicly endorsed CANZUK in a recent newspaper column.
Writing for the Financial Times, Davey delivered his remarks within an article saying that the UK should not cave in to President Donald Trump’s “bullying” by lowering the UK’s Digital Services Tax, and the British Government should take a firmer approach with the U.S. Administration.
Davey claimed that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is making a mistake with his friendly approach to President Trump in recent weeks in the hope of sparing Britain from punitive trade measures, arguing that “Trump will put tariffs on us regardless”.

“He’s not sentimental . . . he can change his mind at a moment’s notice,” Davey said. “He’s an unreliable ally.”
Davey’s remarks come as he leads the UK’s third-largest party in Westminster with 72 MPs. In challenging the ongoing tariff threats from the United States, Davey also publicly suggested a new strategic grouping with Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
“The grouping would focus on enhanced intelligence sharing, increased trade and greater co-operation around foreign and defence policy,” Davey said. He also suggested that such an alliance “might annoy [Trump] but . . . he respects people who have got some strength”.
Davey’s remarks come shortly after Prime Minister Starmer recently announced that the UK Government would pursue closer ties with Canada and its new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and both Canada and Australia announced a strategic military partnership for protection of the arctic.
CANZUK International welcomes the endorsement from the UK Liberal Democrats and looks forward to connecting with the party’s MPs in the coming days to further advance CANZUK objectives.
