In a historic address to both Houses of the Australian Parliament in Canberra, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of collaboration between “middle powers” like Canada and Australia to navigate global instability and strengthen democratic alliances.
This speech, delivered on March 5, 2026, marks a significant moment in bilateral relations, aligning with CANZUK International’s mission to foster deeper ties in diplomacy, trade, defence, and mobility among Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Carney’s address highlighted shared challenges, including geopolitical tensions with superpowers such as China and the United States, and called for enhanced cooperation in defence, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence. He pointed to the need for sovereign strategies that protect economic security and promote innovation, echoing themes from his earlier speech at the Lowy Institute in Sydney.

During the visit, Carney and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a series of new partnerships, including Australia’s participation in Canada’s Critical Minerals Production Alliance, a Clean Energy Partnership, and a Memorandum of Understanding on AI Safety. These initiatives aim to diversify supply chains, advance sustainable technologies, and enhance defence interoperability, such as training opportunities for Canadian forces in Australia.
“In an era of rupture in the global order, middle powers like ours must step up. By deepening our partnership, Canada and Australia can lead in creating resilient economies, secure supply chains, and a safer world for our citizens.”, Carney said.
The agreements also include modernizing the Canada-Australia Tax Treaty to facilitate investment and exploring a Status of Forces Agreement to streamline military cooperation. Carney described Australia as Canada’s “strategic cousin,” underscoring the familial bonds and shared values that underpin these advancements.
This visit, the first by a Canadian Prime Minister to Australia in nearly two decades, builds on existing frameworks like AUKUS and the Five Eyes alliance, paving the way for broader CANZUK integration.
CANZUK International welcomes these developments as a crucial step toward realizing enhanced trade, defence, and mobility among our four nations, especially in the face of global uncertainties.
