The Prime Ministers of Canada and the United Kingdom, Justin Trudeau and Boris Johnson, met in London this week to reaffirm their commitment to developing closer ties between the two countries.
Johnson and Trudeau agreed upon their mutual support for Ukraine during their ongoing invasion by Russia, the need for Canada and the UK to collaborate more on economic policy, and the establishment of a Canada-UK Travel Health Dialogue to be discussed as part of upcoming trade negotiations.
The joint statement issued by the Prime Ministers read as follows:
Closer ties between our two countries have never been as important as they are now – to stand up for democracy and build resilient, forward-looking, and green societies. We will strengthen bilateral cooperation on several critical fronts…
– deeper collaboration with respect to security and intelligence, including through Five Eyes, to better combat current and future threats to democracy and our collective security and economic interests, including from foreign interference, economic coercion, disinformation and cyber attacks;
– negotiating a new, ambitious, progressive free trade agreement between Canada and the UK and working with the UK to successfully complete its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)
– establish a new UK-Canada Travel Health Dialogue to explore the scope for bilateral cooperation to underpin greater international consistency on border and travel measures, and on how countries use global travel health policies in their responses to further variants and global health challenges.
The announcement comes after the United Kingdom and Canada agreed to commence negotiations for a comprehensive trade deal in April 2022.
The government of Canada also held public consultations in April 2021 to solicit views of Canadians on a Canada-United Kingdom trade agreement. Of the 42 submissions received by the government, 28 (including a comprehensive submission by CANZUK International) suggested that any bilateral free trade agreement should constitute a step towards a broader trade agreement between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, with free movement of people being cited as a key area of interest.
The Canada-UK trade negotiations will also commence following the conclusion of bespoke trade deals between the UK, and Australia and New Zealand, which provide for the removal of tariffs and the freer movement of people.
CANZUK International welcomes the dialogue between the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom, and will continue to work with Ministers from both countries to ensure the upcoming Canada-UK trade deal is inclusive of CANZUK-supportive policies regarding trade and free movement.
