The UK Government are reviewing the expansion of age limitations for Australian nationals seeking work permits, according to senior sources within the UK Civil Service.
The expansion would build upon visa provisions negotiated under the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (AUKFTA), and provide greater eligibility for Australian citizens looking to live and work in the United Kingdom.
At present, UK and Australian nationals can live and work in each others’ countries for a period of up to three years, providing they are aged 35 and under.

However, in conversations with CANZUK International, senior bureaucrats within the UK Civil Service have alluded to new provisions which would reduce age restrictions on work and resident visas for Australian nationals wishing to live and work in the UK.
While no timelines have been provided for the initiative’s introduction to date, emphasis has been placed on the close relationship between the two countries, and the highly skilled workforces in Australia and the UK which would provide mutual benefits under mobility arrangements.
“If we deem the case feasible, then working visas becoming applicable for Australians under 45, or even 50, is possible,” said the source. “We have a trade deal in place, so the next logical step is to see how we can build on this and address our need for skills in the economy.”
The introduction of this measure would also likely be reciprocated for UK citizens looking to live and work in Australia as part of the AUKFTA, and comes shortly after the Australian Government announced comprehensive changes to its visa programs this month.
CANZUK International looks forward to progressing these conversations with the UK Civil Service and continually expanding visa provisions for Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and British nationals under future CANZUK initiatives.
